Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to contact the insurance company before going to the hospital?

Yes — whenever possible, call the number on your policy card before seeking non-emergency treatment. Each insurer has a network of preferred providers, and getting pre-approval helps ensure the process goes smoothly and costs are covered directly where possible.

In a genuine emergency, get the care you need first and call as soon as you're able — most insurers will still cover you, though the claims process may require more documentation.

What does trip cancellation actually cover?

Trip cancellation coverage reimburses your prepaid, non-refundable travel costs if you have to cancel before departure due to a covered reason — typically things like serious illness, injury, or a death in the family.

Trip interruption coverage applies if something happens after you've already departed and you need to return home early or continue travel at additional cost. The specific covered reasons vary by policy, so it's worth reviewing before you buy.

Can I get travel insurance if I have pre-existing medical conditions?

In most cases, yes — subject to a medical questionnaire. Coverage for pre-existing conditions is available through several of our insurers, but it depends on factors like your age, the nature of the condition, and how recently it was treated or changed. It's important to answer the questionnaire accurately, as undisclosed conditions can result in a denied claim.

Do I need travel insurance for trips within Canada?

If you're travelling within your home province, your provincial health plan covers you.

Outside your province, coverage becomes limited — other provinces may bill your home province differently, and things like emergency dental, prescription drugs, or medical evacuation generally aren't covered at all. Travel insurance fills those gaps.

For travel outside Canada, it's essential.

My credit card includes travel insurance — is that enough?

Credit card travel coverage varies widely. Common limitations include caps on medical coverage, restrictions on trip length, requirements that the trip be purchased on that card, and exclusions for pre-existing conditions. We can't speak to the specific terms of your card, but in our experience the coverage often has gaps that people don't discover until they need to make a claim. Purchasing a dedicated policy gives you certainty about what you're covered for.

What is Visitor to Canada insurance?

If you have family or friends visiting from outside Canada, or if you're a newcomer who hasn't yet been enrolled in provincial health coverage, Visitor to Canada insurance provides emergency medical coverage during your stay. It can even be purchased after arrival in some cases. Let us know the situation and we'll find the right option.
