Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to own the car to get insurance?

Not necessarily. If you are insuring a vehicle you don't own, the registered owner will need to sign the back of the ICBC renewal form, and the policy amount must be paid in full. Keep in mind this option isn't available if the vehicle is being financed.

Can I renew my insurance online?

Absolutely! You can visit icbc.com for more information. Alternatively, feel free to give us a call, and we’ll assist you with renewing your insurance over the phone.

How much liability should I buy?

BC's basic ICBC plan includes $200,000 in third-party liability, which covers property damage and bodily injury to out-of-province drivers. For most people, that's not enough. Increasing your liability limit is one of the most cost-effective upgrades you can make, and the premium difference is usually small, but the protection difference is significant. We're happy to walk you through the options.

I am from out of province. Do I need ICBC insurance?

It depends on how long you'll be in BC and whether you're establishing residency. Visitors driving through generally don't need to switch, but if you're moving to BC or staying long-term, you'll need to register with ICBC.

The specifics vary by situation, so it's worth a call or a visit to icbc.com to confirm what applies to you.

Do I need to have a driver’s license to insure a vehicle?

No — You don't need a license to insure a vehicle but, you do need to list a licenced driver and you must have government issued identification.

What's the difference between comprehensive and collision coverage?

Comprehensive covers damage that isn't caused by a collision — things like theft, vandalism, fire, glass breakage, or hitting an animal.

Collision covers damage to your own vehicle when you're at fault in an accident. Both are optional add-ons to your basic ICBC policy, but most people financing or leasing a vehicle are required to carry them.
